Russ Feingold and the most important thing you can do today.

Russ Feingold, the lone senator to take a stand against the USA PATRIOT ACT, called for an end to the occupation today.

This is the first serious presidential prospect to take this stand.

If we want a candidate in 2008 that will want to end this war, we need to show support and do so with the full force of our keyboards and wallets.

When a Democrat acts like a Democrat, we need to pony up and put our money where our mouths are.

Contribute now, and add .08 dollars to your donation to express your support.

Now, I know the blogosphere has abandoned Russ Feingold now that he's going through a divorce and is no longer electable.

I'm sorry, but it's asinine to think that people too morally righteous to vote for a divorcee would vote for a woman married to a man who's adultery is known throughout the planet.   People so judgmental that they wouldn't vote for a divorced man aren't going to vote for a woman or a Democrat at all, unless we give them the anti-gay, pro-war and pro-business Biden/McCain ticket that in our sick, twisted state of political discourse is a potential Democratic ticket.

If we don't stand for civil rights...
If we don't stand for cleaning up politics...
If we don't stand against this war...

Then we don't stand for anything and we'll continue to field candidates who offer the nation nothing but nitpicking and nagging of Republican policy.

Even if you're not supporting Russ, or think Hillary is unstopable, this is still a message we need to send to her and the rest of the milquetoast pro-war, anti-civil liberties members of the Senate.  We can start trying to condition our own little Pavlov Democrats.

If you want to stand with Russ, donate now.

Then pass this on.

And end this fucking war.

Crossposted this at DailyKos and I aplogizing for whoring, but I really believe we need to do this.

Draft Feingold Petition (3.00 / 1)

In addition to pocket book support, the Feingold 08 bloggers have put out a petition to draft Feingold into running in 08 (although I think he will probably run regardless, but its nice to show support). http://www.petitiononline.com/feing08/

Consistency (3.00 / 1)

Senator Feingold's consistent brave stand on the war is outlined in the timeline below:

http://russforpresident.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=62&Itemid=54

Beyond simply giving money to his Senate campaign I recommend getting involved with RussForPresident.com.

There are also state specific efforts like:

TennesseansForFeingold.blogspot.com
MichiganForFeingold.blogspot.com
NJforFeingold.org

Independent grass roots efforts working together can achieve great things. So RUN RUSS RUN!

That link points to his Senate '04 website (none / 0)

Does that even count? Can he use money donated for an election that's over?

Re: That link points to his Senate '04 website (none / 0)

Apparently so. I don't understand it, but I think Frist was doing the same thing and would have been OK, but he pulled some shenanigans loaning money back and forth and violated some technical reporting requirements or something.

I never did exactly figure it out, but the general impression I got is that the rules are pretty lose. That's how Hillary and others can build up a Senate war chest and use it to run for President.

Re: That link points to his Senate '04 website (none / 0)

You CAN donate to Senator Feingold's Senate website and then can transfer than money to a presidential campaign. The only problem is that the money can not be used until he begins a presidential campaign.

The other ways to help are:

Give to the Progressive Patriots Fund to Support Sen. Feingold's travels

Give to www.RussForPresident.com to support the grassroots effort to get the Senator support

RE: (1.00 / 2)

feingold is unelectable for a variety of reasons, not just his 3 divorces.
by Ann Driscoll on Thu Aug 18, 2005 at 04:23:19 PM EST

Re: RE: not true (3.00 / 0)

First off, the good senator has had 2 divorces and not 3. Second of all, we spent 2004 looking for electability and we found john kerry - the results speak for themselves. If you want an honest, pragmatic, progressive , and brave voice vote for Feingold. I'd like to hear an intelligent rebuttal not consisting of "he's a divorced jew".

Keep in mind, he got more votes in WI than Kerry or Bush and was reelected by a wide margin after being the sole voice against the patriot act. I await a reply.

Re: RE: (3.00 / 1)

"feingold is unelectable for a variety of reasons, not just his 3 divorces. "
Since Ann didn't list any reasons, maybe she was thinking of some of these:
  1.  Senator Feingold voted against NAFTA, GATT, Fast Track, and Most Favored Nation status for China.
  2.  Senator Feingold supports equal pay, equal rights, and reproductive freedom for women.
  3.  Senator Feingold voted against the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
  4.  Senator Feingold has cosponsored legislation to prohibit hiring permanent replacement workers during strikes.
  5.  Senator Feingold was the only Senator to vote against the PATRIOT Act.
  6.  Senator Feingold has introduced legislation to end to the automatic cost-of-living adjustment for Members of Congress
  7.  Senator Feingold voted against the war in Iraq.
Now if you disagree with Ann, and you think that these are good reasons to elect Senator Feingold President, here are somethings you can do:

You can donate to his Progressive Patriot's Fund.

Join the Feingold08 Yahoo discussion group to share ideas about getting the Senator elected President.

Start a local Meetup type group to support Senator Feingold.

Write letters to the editor supporting the Senator's call for withdrawing the troops.

Sign the draft Russ petition and visit the websites mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

etc...

Re: Blowing a hold in my budget (none / 0)

I promised myself not to contribute more than $50/ month on political contributions. To hell with that. For Feingold and the first honest Democrat with a backbone, I'm in for $100.

I should say the first honest Democrat with a backbone who is running for President. Kucinich, Maxine Waters, John Conyers, John Lewis, Barbara Lee (why aren't there more white guys on this list?) and formerly Barbara Boxer and Howard Dean with the exception of Iraq are among the few Democrats who have demonstrated any backbone this session.

What happened to Boxer anyway? Did somebody give her the same lecture they gave to Dean about speaking for the party on policy? Was she getting too popular with the grassroots?

Re: RE: (none / 0)

The think about Russ is that he never seems to vote for the crap that other Dems get conned into supporting.

Re: RE:Good Lord woman (none / 0)

Is he unelectable if the Republicans select Newt Gingrich? For Christ sake. Let's allow our candidates to be human.
